In Amsterdam-Osdorp, Netherlands, an existing row of flats was replaced by an optimized modern version of the terraced house. In order to build as many houses as possible, Atelier Kempe Thill reduced the grid to a minimum in line with the governing regulations. As a result, the houses became quite deep, accomplishing the surface area required by the client. As a side effect, the façade, generally the most expensive part of a building, was also reduced in relation to the surface—and thus cheap cubic meters were created. To bring in enough daylight, the openings were maximized. Moreover, an innovative concept was developed for the outside spaces of the building. On the rear side of each unit, space for storage and cars was integrated on the ground floor. The accessing street was covered by terraces on the second floor.
