0028 Folding Bridge, Amsterdam, NL
The task pursued by Atelier Kempe Thill in developing the proposal for this project in the Netherlands was to design a 110-meter-long, 19-meter-wide bridge over the Johan van Hasseltkanaal. Three small bridges were proposed instead of one. This would allow for a better view of the water, elegant proportions, and light reflections between the structures. The movable sections of the bridges consist of two folding elements. When the bridges open, the two elements move in a complex manner and seem to dance in the air. The bridges lend a strong identity to the canal and could become a landmark for this part of Amsterdam.
