0030 Youth hostel, Prora, DE
In the spring of 2004 Atelier Kempe Thill has won the international competition for a new seven hundred bed youth hostel in the four and a half kilometre long former Nazi sea hotel in Prora, Germany. The building is a monument of modernism and regarded as one of the few realised band cities.
The design takes the original intentions of the architect Clemens Klotz as a starting point, and improves them where necessary or even enhances them. The special characteristics of Prora like the enormous length or the stoic window rhythm are interpreted as qualities. Some of the original parts like the “rue interieur” are restored.
