0034 The acrylic dome, Echigo, JP
The striving for vaster spans and for transparency are two primordial themes in architecture; the possibilities for their realisation are largely dependent on technological developments. The acrylic dome belongs to both traditions and attempts to combine maximum spatial volume with total transparency. Architecture is thus reduced to refracting the light and reflecting the surroundings. Having attained this optical minimum, the acrylic dome balances on the edge of inexistence, the disappearance of architecture.
From within the shape of the dome resembles the human eye, being visually imperceptible yet physically present. The acrylic dome is set in a field, referring to the relationship between human being and nature.
