0074 John Paul II Center, Krakow, PL
Throughout history, religion has been one of the keystones of Polish national identity and has developed into a contemporary mass cultural phenomenon. The core idea of the project proposal by Atelier Kempe Thill in the open competition for the new John Paul II Center in Cracow, Poland, was to create a huge amphitheater for religious events with ten thousands of visitors. The amphitheater would be surrounded by a museum, a conference center, and a multifunctional foyer. The whole complex would be covered with an enormous translucent roof of 140 by 100 meters featuring golden aluminum cladding.
