0195 Herkenrode Site, Hasselt, BE
Herkenrode is located in the historic city center of Hasselt, Belgium, and it long served as a military site. After the army left, the complex fulfilled various functions for the federal government. Now it has been reconverted into a sustainable and lively quarter. Abscis Architects, Atelier Kempe Thill, and UAU Collectiv designed a diverse and sustainable housing project that shows great respect for the historical context and aims at bringing a wide range of people to the town of Hasselt. The buildings on the edge of the site were partly renewed. Situated inside these walls is a courtyard, a green oasis where residents and visitors can relax. This is where, in the heart of the development, Atelier Kempe Thill introduced a new urban villa.
